A violent crash left two people dead and shut down part of FM 1960 for hours Friday morning.

The crash closed all lanes of FM 1960 near the intersection of Wortham Boulevard through the morning rush hour.

Just after 2:20 a.m., rescue crews were called to that intersection.

Deputies said a man driving a red Volkswagen, who was eating at IHOP with friends, remembered he forgot his jacket at a pub they were at earlier in the night. He left his friend to drive back and get it.

Officials said as he turned into a strip center, he was hit by an oncoming black Camaro.

"He was turning left into a parking lot, as he turned left, he drove into the path of a camaro traveling west bound on 1960," said a Sgt. with the Harris County Sheriff's Office..

The 29-year-old man in the red car was ejected from the car and died on the scene.

The impact was so violent, authorities said the engine of the Volkswagen was thrown several feet down the road.

"The Camaro continued westbound where it struck a utility pole on the passenger side," said police.

The passenger in the Camaro was trapped inside the vehicle. Emergency crews used the Jaws of Life to free him, but he died at the scene.

Officials said the 24-year-old driver of the Camaro was critically injured. She was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital by Life Flight helicopter.

Deputies say alcohol was suspected as a factor in the crash.

"All of the parties involved were both at different clubs tonight," said police. "Whether or not anyone is intoxicated, I don't know."

Deputies said a blood test on the survivor and an autopsy on the two victims will be needed to confirm if alcohol played a role in the crash.

FM 1960 reopened just after 9 a.m.
