Father, son killed by alleged drunk driver in N. Houston

A father and son died and two other family members were injured after an alleged drunk driver ran a red light and crashed into their Suburban in north Houston early Saturday morning.

The driver of the pickup truck was not hurt, but police say he was intoxicated and will be charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter.

Police say a a family of four was t-boned by a speeding pickup that sent the family's Chevy Suburban into a metal light pole.

The driver and front-seat passenger in the Suburban, identified as Juan Alvarez and his 9-year-old son, Juan Alvarez Jr., died at the scene, authorities and relatives of the family said. Two others in the SUV, Alvarez's wife and 3-year old son, were taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital for treatment.

Driver charged with intoxicated manslaughter in death of father, son

Juan Alvarez and his son Juan Alvarez Jr. died at the scene. The man's wife Elizabeth and 3-year-old son Ian survived the crash. They were transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital "We're told that their injuries are not expected to be life-threatening but the mother has some severe leg trauma," said Sgt. S. Wolverton of the Harris County Sheriff's Department. The toddler barely suffered a scratch, quite possibly because of what he was riding in. "(He) was secured in a safety seat," Sgt. Wolverton said, "while still secured in a safety seat was hanging out of the vehicle."

HCDAO: Man sentenced after driving drunk, killing 2 people in SUV

A man was sentenced to 16 years in prison after police say he hit an SUV with a family of four inside, causing a crash that killed a father and son. 
A father and son died and two other family members were injured after an alleged drunk driver crashed into their Suburban. The crash is said to have occurred after the driver of a pick-up truck ran a red light. The two other occupants of the Suburban, a Elizabeth Alvarez and 3-year old son, Ian Alvarez, are in the hospital. The pickup driver, Jose Trinidad Rivera, 41, was charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter along with one county of intoxication assault, according to court records.
