The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. at a private airfield on FM 223 just east of Shepherd, about 60 miles north of Houston. An initial investigation reveled that the pilot of the self-built, two-seater plane over-ran the runway and crashed into the tree line, Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Stephanie Davis said.

One man was killed and another was critically injured during a small plane crash in San Jacinto County Saturday afternoon, authorities said. His passenger, Rene Weatherford, 35, of Houston, was taken by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital and is in critical condition.
