The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. at a private airfield on FM 223 just east of Shepherd, about 60 miles north of Houston. An initial investigation reveled that the pilot of the self-built, two-seater plane over-ran the runway and crashed into the tree line, Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Stephanie Davis said.

According to a trooper, witnesses said the pilot overshot the runway and ran into a treeline.

There were only two occupants in the plane, one of which was pronounced dead, while the other sustained broken legs and multiple other broken bones.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Lynn Lunsford says it's not clear what caused the unregistered plane to crash late Saturday afternoon near Shepherd. 
One man was killed and another was critically injured during a small plane crash in San Jacinto County Saturday afternoon, authorities said. The plane's pilot, Marcus Schmitt, 44, of Shepherd, died at the scene. His passenger, Rene Weatherford, 35, of Houston, was taken by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital and is in critical condition. The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.
