Several witnesses told San Antonio police Martinez was speeding just before midnight in a pickup truck moments before he lost control of the vehicle on the Interstate 10 access road near Callaghan Road.

A man died in a fiery crash late Tuesday night in San Antonio. But before emergency crew arrived, a few good Samaritans tried to save him.

The accident happened on the access road of eastbound Interstate 10, between Medical Drive and Callaghan Road.

Investigators said the victim was speeding and lost control of his truck as he was exiting the highway. The vehicle hit a utility box before rolling over and landing in a grassy section of the median. Then it burst into flames, according to the San Antonio Police Department.

Three employees from the Sumo Japanese Steakhouse, who were closing the restaurant, tried to help.

They grabbed a fire extinguisher and rushed over to put the flames out, but it was too late.

Investigators said the man died from the impact of the crash and not the fire. His identity has not been released.

The access road was closed for a few hours while crews cleared the scene.
