SAFD: 1 killed in plane crash near Government Canyon

San Antonio Fire Department officials said at least one person was killed when the airplane they were in crashed near Government Canyon State Park, in Northwest Bexar County.

Emergency crews scoured the 12,000 acres of heavily wooded greenspace in northwest Bexar County with a helicopter after the plane crash was reported around 4:30 p.m.

Wesley Snapp lives approximately 3 to 4 miles away. "I didn't actually see or witness the plane go down, but it was basically down in a dive," said Snapp. Snapp said typically planes don't travel as low as what he saw. Snapp said he initially thought the plane was "being reckless."

"We saw the response vehicles gathering around the gate," said Rebekka Broyles, 15, who noticed two fire trucks and four SAPD SUVs idled at the rural park gate about 4:50 p.m. "We could see one helicopter hanging around and then we saw two more coming."

NTSB: No engine failure prior to fatal plane crash

National Transportation Safety Board officials said there was no evidence of engine failure in a deadly plane crash near Government Canyon State Natural Area.

Thomas Baber, 66 is dead after a small-plane accident near Government Canyon State Park. The plane was described as a Thunder Mustang, or a fixed-wing, single-engine two-seater plane that apparently looks similar to a vintage World War II-era aircraft. NTSB officials said that investigators spoke to a witness who said that he saw the plane perform a maneuver moments before crashing. The plane had been seen performing similar maneuvers in the past.
