Estimated 1,000 gallons of crude oil spill in Provo River from tanker crash

According to information provided by the Utah Department of Public Safety, a semitrailer was traveling westbound near mile post 13 on State Route 189 through Provo Canyon. At approximately 10 a.m., the driver hit a patch of slush while attempting to change lanes. The driver told officials he lost control of the semi, veered left, and crashed into the median barrier. This caused both the semitrailer and two tankers filled with crude oil to roll over. The truck was resting across all eastbound and westbound lanes, prompting the closure of Provo Canyon. According to the Utah Department of Public Safety, the front tank that was holding nearly 5,000 gallons of crude oil ruptured and spilled most of its contents. The rear tank did not spill.
