Nevada man pleads guilty in hit-and-run death of Utah cyclist

A Nevada man charged in the hit-and-run death last year of a handicapped St. Fairse was charged with one count of failure to remain at an accident involving death, a third-degree felony, according to the court docket. Canfield was killed instantly when struck on southwestern Utah's Old Highway 91 at about 8 p.m., Holt has said. Gary William Fairse, 34, of Mesquite, Nev., was charged in St. George's 5th District Court in connection with the Oct. 21, 2014 death of Steven Jed Canfield, a 57-year-old polio survivor who used a hand-powered bicycle-wheelchair device, according to Santa Clara-Ivins Police Officer Chad Holt.

Holt said Old Highway 91 is a common road for bicyclists.

Charges filed against driver in fatal hit-and-run, police say

Fairse will be charged in connection with an accident involving death, Holt said.

Steve Jed Canfield, 57, of St. George, was pronounced dead on the scene after a hit-and-run accident Tuesday evening. The accident occured on Old Highway 91 near the Kayenta community of Ivins around 8 p.m. A passerby hit the bicycle in the road and stopped to locate the bicyclist. The passerby found Canfield on the side of the road and called 911. There were no witnesses to the accident and no leads, but the alleged driver of the vehicle, Gary Fairse, 33, contacted police late Tuesday evening. Police are interviewing the driver and no charges had been filed as of Wednesday afternoon, but the investigation is ongoing.
