Tractor-trailer, car crash leaves 3 dead in Va.

Virginia State Police are investigating a two-vehicle crash in New Kent County that left three dead.

Julio C. Gonzalez-Hernandez, 61, Javier D. Ferrer, 25, and Jose A. Lopez-Velasquez, 26, were all killed in the accident. The car's driver, Saul A. Gonzalez-Hernandez, 65, brother of Julio C. Gonzalez-Hernandez, remains in critical condition, according to an email from a spokesperson for the Virginia State Police (VSP).

At approximately 12:31 p.m. on April 8, a Senior Trooper responded to a crash after the driver of a 1992 Toyota Tercel, Saul A. Gonzalez-Hernandez, was attempting to crossover Route 155 from Kentland Trail and failed to yield the right-of-way to the driver of a 2013 Volvo tractor-trailer. At the time of the crash, the driver of the tractor-trailer was traveling south on Route 155 and was unable to avoid striking the Toyota.

The front seat passenger, Julio C. Gonzalez-Hernandez, who was wearing his seat belt, died at the scene. The rear seat passenger behind the front seat passenger, Ferrer, was not wearing his seat belt and died at the scene. The rear seat passenger behind the driver, Lopez-Velasquez, was not wearing his seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. He suffered serious life-threatening injuries and was transported to VCU Medical Center where he later died.

The Toyota driver, Saul A. Gonzalez-Hernandez, remains in the hospital in critical condition.

The driver of the tractor trailer, who was wearing his seat belt, was not injured in the crash.

After consultation with the New Kent County Commonwealth's Attorney's Office, Saul A. Gonzalez-Hernandez, the driver of the Toyota, has been charged with reckless driving.

The crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the Virginia State Police Accident Reconstruction Team and the New Kent County Sheriff’s Office.

Alcohol and speed are not considered factors in the crash.

The victims were employed by a temp agency periodically used by Colonial Downs.

Route 155 southbound was reopened at approximately 4:30 p.m.
