A trooper with the Virginia State Police has died while on duty.

An agency spokeswoman stated that a rescue crew on Saturday found 65-year-old Sgt. J. Michael Phillippi still seated inside a Chevrolet Impala. The car had crashed into a road sign, crossed the highway and hit an embankment.

The accident occurred on Route 57 near Route 9728 around 2:30 a.m.

Phillippi was working an overnight supervisory shift. He was taken to Martinsville Memorial Hospital, where he died a short time later.

Geller says minimal damage to the car suggests that it wasn't traveling at a high rate of speed when the accident occurred.

Phillippi's body has been sent to the medical examiner's office in Roanoke for an autopsy.

State police are investigating the accident.
