Southwest Virginia mine worker struck by falling rock, killed

The company says preliminary information suggests that Brummitte was conducting a pre-shift exam when he was "struck by rock sloughing off the mine wall."

Alpha Chairman and CEO Kevin Crutchfield said, "Our thoughts and prayers are with David's family. Words cannot express how deeply saddened our company and community are by this tragic event."
According to Alpha Natural Resources Inc., David Brummitte of Pound was found around 5:10 a.m. Monday after being struck by a falling rock at Deep Mine 41 near McClure. He was transported to Dickenson Community Hospital in Clintwood, where he was pronounced dead at about 7:45 a.m. The mine is run by Paramont Coal Company.
