Man struck, killed by train in Auburn; crew thought they hit rocks

The train crew thought they had hit some rocks while passing through the area in very foggy conditions. AUBURN, Wash. - A man in his 40s was struck and killed by a freight train Thursday morning while walking along railroad tracks in Auburn, but the train crew didn't realize it until later due to thick fog in the area where the man was hit, police said. Later, during a scheduled stop in Fife, the train operator noticed "debris" on the front of the train and realized someone had been hit. The incident unfolded just before 7 a.m. as the train was heading along Union Pacific tracks near 29th Street and Emerald Downs Way. Police walked the tracks and found the man's clothes first and then his body.
