Driver crashes, totals Jeep while reaching for cupcake; 2 injured

The driver, a 40-year-old Port Townsend man, and his female passenger were taken to the hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries. State troopers responded to the scene, south of Port Townsend near the intersection of Highway 19 and Highway 20, at about 5 p.m. A preliminary investigation found that the Jeep was heading north on Highway 19 when the driver "reached into the back seat and attempted to retrieve a cupcake," says a State Patrol report on the crash. While the driver was distracted by his efforts to get the cupcake, the Jeep drifted onto the shoulder of the highway then crashed into the ditch and finally came to a stop against a tree. The driver faces a possible negligent driving charge after he is released from the hospital.
