Three killed in two-car crash in Marinette County

On scene, deputies investigated and said that one car, driven by 60-year-old Daniel Mrotek of Berlin, was going west on Moonshine Hill Road when he failed to stop for a stop sign and hit a northbound car on County Highway A.

On Friday night, a devastating two-vehicle collision near Stephenson, Wisconsin, resulted in the loss of three lives, sending shockwaves through the local community. The fatal accident occurred just before 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of County Highway A and Moonshine Hill Road in Marinette County. According to the Marinette County sheriff's deputies' preliminary investigation, the crash involved two vehicles in a catastrophic collision that claimed the lives of all three occupants. Daniel Mrotek, 60, from Berlin, was driving west on Moonshine Hill Road when he reportedly failed to stop at a stop sign, directly impacting a northbound vehicle on County Highway A. Mrotek was ejected and died at the scene. The northbound vehicle was driven by Thomas Robe, 71, of Oak Creek, with his wife Sharon Robe, 68, also in the vehicle. Both Thomas and Sharon Robe also lost their lives in the incident. Multiple local emergency services, including the Town of Stephenson Fire Department, Twin Bridge Rescue, and various towing services, responded to the scene to assist Marinette County deputies.

The intersection of County Highway A and Moonshine Hill Road is located in a rural area of Stephenson, a town characterized by its agricultural landscape and sparse population. This stretch of roadway is known for its challenging rural road conditions, which can be particularly treacherous during nighttime hours. County highways in this region often feature limited visibility, minimal lighting, and intersections with varying traffic control devices. The specific location where the accident occurred is surrounded by open farmland, with minimal commercial or residential development nearby. Such rural intersections frequently present unique navigational challenges, including limited sight lines, uneven road surfaces, and the potential for unexpected obstacles or wildlife crossings.

From a legal perspective, this tragic incident raises several important considerations for those involved. Wisconsin traffic laws require all drivers to exercise reasonable care and adhere to traffic control devices, including stop signs. In fatal accidents like these, potential legal actions might involve wrongful death claims, which typically must be filed within three years of the date of death under Wisconsin's statute of limitations. Potential compensation could include medical expenses, funeral and burial costs, lost future income, loss of companionship, and other damages related to the victims' untimely deaths. Insurance considerations may involve multiple policies, including auto insurance coverage, potential uninsured/underinsured motorist claims, and potential third-party liability investigations. However, it is crucial to note that each case is unique, and individuals seeking legal recourse should consult with a qualified legal professional who can provide personalized guidance.
