Charges pending against driver in fatal Dane County crash.
Dane County authorities said Tuesday charges are pending against the driver involved in a fatal two-vehicle crash in the Town of York over the weekend.
William R. Berndt, 47, of Fall River was driving a sedan on Highway TT, failed to stop at the marked intersection with Highway 73 and crashed into a minivan traveling on Highway 73, according to a news release.
The crash occurred about 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Berndt's passenger, Michael Dykstra, 51, of Fall River was pronounced dead at the scene. Berndt was flown by helicopter to UW Hospital and Clinics, where he remained hospitalized Tuesday, authorities said.
The 64-year-old driver and the two occupants, ages 63 and 19, in the minivan were taken to UW Hospital with serious injuries but are expected to recover, officials said.
Officials have said alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor in the crash. A Dane County sheriff's office spokeswoman declined on Tuesday to specify what charges authorities might seek against the driver, who remained hospitalized and had not been booked into jail.
