Deputy injured after car loses control while approaching the scene of an accident on I-145 in Milwaukee County, and crashes into deputies cruiser.
Milwaukee Co. sheriff's deputy hit for second time this winter.
For the second time this winter, a Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office deputy is hit in his squad car.
He was banged up by both crashes. The first time he was hit was in a massive pileup in December on Highway 41.
Then, Thursday afternoon, he responded to a rollover crash when another driver slammed into his squad car.
Emergency lights were flashing after a sport utility vehicle rolled over near the southbound Interstate 145 on-ramp to U.S. 45. Several cars passed the emergency vehicles slowly. Then, a Chevrolet sedan slammed into the guardrail, swerved across the ramp, hit the back of an SUV, bounced off and slammed into the driver's door of the deputy's squad car before striking the rear of a fire truck.
"The vehicle in question, he lost control, driving too fast for conditions," Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office Capt. Daniel Hughes said.
Hughes said two deputies and fire crew had all been walking around just before the squad car was hit.
"Any one of them could have been killed. In fact, another one of my officers who was not hit, he was on foot, outside and he was yelling for the other officer, basically to take cover because he saw it coming," Hughes said.
This winter has been dangerous for officers. A half-dozen Milwaukee County sheriff squad cars have been hit by cars since Dec. 1.
"Five of which were rear-end or losing control, T-bone type crashes," Hughes said.
Hughes said drivers have to get the message, especially when there are emergency vehicles already responding to a crash.
"We have to adjust our speeds for the conditions we have out there. We have to slow down," he said.
The deputy will be OK, but he does have some injuries from Thursday's crash. Some of the other deputies hit this winter are still not back to work here.
