An experienced female skydiver was killed during a group world-record skydiving attempt when a parachute malfunctioned on Thursday morning in Eloy.

The person was part of a 222-person group trying to break the world record for a "formation jump" about 7:30 a.m.

The skydiver's parachute was released too low to allow the reserve chute to fully open and not related to aircraft, the size of the group or weather conditions, according to an official statement from Skydive Arizona, an Eloy skydiving business.

Traffic is again flowing on eastbound Interstate 10 after it was closed Wednesday morning in Eloy because of a crash involving a semi, an Arizona Department of Transportation spokesman said. The crash was reported just west of the interchange with State Route 87 about 8:50 a.m. when a commercial truck driver failed to slow for congested traffic and struck a pickup truck pulling a trailer, an Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman said. No one was injured and the truck driver was cited, the DPS spokesman said.

Police say two skydivers are dead after they collided during a jump over southern Arizona. Eloy says witnesses told authorities both skydivers had open parachutes when they collided about 200 to 300 feet above the ground Tuesday afternoon. At that point, their canopies collapsed and they fell. Jerome says one person was pronounced dead at the scene. The other was taken to Casa Grande Regional Medical Center and was pronounced dead there. A third skydiver was injured but police say that skydiver was not involved in the collision and the injuries are not believed to be serious.
