Duell was flying a plane southwest from Wasilla to Beluga at the same time Bara was flying another plane northwest from Chugiak to a landing area near Johnson Creek, at about 1:05pm, when the two planes collided. According to witness accounts, neither plane made attempts to change direction or altitude as they neared each other at a 90 degree angle and eventually crashed into each other, and that Duell's plane made a more controlled crash than Bara's, which began to come apart after the collision and plummeted to the ground in an intense crash.
