33-year-old James Love and 34-year-old Deon Roberts are facing seven federal charges after deliberately causing an Amtrak train to derail in an insurance fraud scheme. Prosecutors say that Love and Roberts parked a stolen 2013 Kia on train tracks, then left until a train crashed into it. Then the two men returned to the scene and got into the damaged car, claiming to have been injured in the crash. No one aboard the train was injured.

At about 1 p.m. Tuesday outside Mary Black Memorial Hospital, Ashton Hughes, 19, died in a car crash as she was leaving a hospital appointment in Spartanburg County. Her Honda van apparently ran into an SUV that was stopped at a traffic signal on Skylyn Drive at Drayton Road. Hughes was pregnant, and the twins she was carrying survived, as did her 11-month-old baby that was also in the car. That baby was uninjured. The driver of the SUV, a Pauline woman, was also not injured in the accident.
