A Baltimore woman died from injuries sustained in a chain-reaction accident along Route 1 in Jessup Wednesday morning. According to Howard County Police, Rafaella Bonita Griffin, 39, of Cooks Lane in Baltimore, died Wednesday night after being taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center earlier in the day. Griffin's vehicle, a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta, was stopped at a traffic light on northbound Route 1, preparing to turn left into the Route 1 Shopping Center south of Kit Kat Road in Jessup, according to police.

A contracted highway worker was killed Friday afternoon in an accident on the inner loop of Interstate 695, just prior to Interstate 795 in Baltimore County, according to police and highway officials. The worker, who has not been identified, was doing preliminary work for an upcoming State Highway Administration project in the Pikesville area when the collission occurred about 2 p.m., said a SHA spokeswoman. The worker is an employee of a private contractor hired by the SHA to conduct the work, Burnette Edgar said.

A fatal accident closed all southbound lanes of I-495 South near Route 50 in Maryland early Tuesday, but two lanes were reopened by 5:30 a.m.

Maryland State Police said all lanes would be open shortly.

The accident occurred just after 3 a.m. when a vehicle traveling on a ramp from the inner loop of the Beltway onto eastbound Route 50 hit the guardrail. The man, Identified as Christopher Jarrell Wood, got out of the car after the accident, police said, and apparently jumped off the overpass into on coming traffic on I-495.

Police in Maryland are investigating a crash in which two drivers — one a Utahn — died in Gaithersburg.

Montgomery County police say it happened Saturday around 7 p.m. Police say a preliminary investigation indicates the driver of an Acura TL was on Quince Orchard Boulevard turning left onto eastbound Quince Orchard Road when a Dodge Durango hit the Acura.

The driver of the Acura was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead on the scene. The driver of the Dodge was transported to a hospital where he died. Police say neither driver was wearing a seatbelt.

Hundreds of accidents occurred across the Baltimore region Friday morning as freezing rain caused icy conditions during the morning commute, according to local emergency officials.

A bulk of the problems were in Anne Arundel County.

One accident involving a vehicle striking a utility pole closed Route 50 in both directions at St. Margaret's Road in Arnold about noon, the State Highway Administration said.

The road reopened about 12:50 p.m. after Comcast crews worked to carry an electrical wire back over the highway, said David Buck, a SHA spokesman.

Maryland State Police say a man was killed and another man was hurt when a car and a box truck collided on Belair Road in Fallston. It happened about 6:55 a.m. Monday. Troopers say Austin Robert Lentz, 20, of Forest Hill was traveling north when his Mustang crossed the double yellow lines. Police say Lentz’s car hit a truck driven by Donald Glen Ranger, 60, of Mount Wolf, Pa. Lentz was pronounced dead at the scene. Ranger was taken to Shock Trauma in Baltimore. The crash is under investigation.

Montgomery County police detectives are investigating a fatal collision on Old Columbia Pike early Saturday morning. According to police, they were called to a collision at 2:40 a.m. When they arrived, they found a red 2003 Infiniti G35 and a gray 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe in a head-on collision. Police say the Chevrolet Tahoe was driving south when the Infiniti, which was traveling north, crossed the center line into southbound traffic. The two cars collided head-on in the southbound lanes.

A 70-year-old woman was fatally struck on the Suitland Parkway in Forestville early Friday morning.

Police say the victim, an elderly woman, was crossing the Parkway around 5:45 a.m. when she was struck. The driver, who police say had a green light, stayed on the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. Authorities say the victim was walking in an area where it is illegal to do so.

An Owings Mills man was killed Sunday morning after his car crashed into the back of a tractor trailer on the Baltimore Beltway in Pikesville, officials said. Bennie Lee Shaw Jr., 34, was driving on the outer loop of the Beltway near Greenspring Avenue at 4:36 a.m. when his 2005 Audi A8 rear-ended a 1999 International tractor trailer, according to the Maryland State Police. Shaw was trapped in the car and was rescued by Baltimore County firefighters, but was declared dead at the scene, according to the Maryland State Police. The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured.

Motor vehicle accidents are a common occurrence in Baltimore and across Baltimore County. Many crashes are completely avoidable, caused by drunk drivers or distracted drivers. Whatever the cause, car accidents are a major safety and economic issue for the Baltimore community.
