A snowmobile accident Saturday claimed the life of a 53-year-old Eagan man, the Aitkin County Sheriff’s Office reported. Paul R. Schanno II was operating a 2012 Polaris Rush on a trail north of Savanna Portage State Park about 4:40 p.m. Saturday when he collided with a tree at a curve in the trail. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Three college students were killed in a crash with a semi while traveling on an icy road near Northfield Friday, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

The broadside crash happened on Highway 3 at County Road 47 in Dakota County around 3 p.m.

According to the state patrol, an SUV carrying five college students was northbound on Highway 3 when it spun out and went into the southbound lanes. The semi, which was southbound, hit the vehicle broadside.

Two cars were totaled but no one was hurt after a school bus apparently lost control on icy roads in Minneapolis on Wednesday morning. The bus was carrying 29 students from Jenny Lind Elementary School at the time of the accident. According to a witness on the scene, the bus was going down a hill on Dowling Avenue North near Sixth Street North when it slid into two cars. The two cars involved were totaled and the front arm of the bus was sheared off, our photographer says, but no one was hurt. The students were put on a different bus and taken to school.

A car was hit by a Northstar train in Elk River on Tuesday. According to the Sherburne County Sheriff's Office, the crash occurred at Highway 10 and Jackson Avenue. Both northbound and southbound Northstar trains struck a vehicle north of Elk River, according to Metro Transit. No one was injured in the incident. Buses will replace trains from Elk River to St. Cloud and Elk River to Minneapolis.

A 30-year-old snowmobiler died after colliding with a train in Brainerd. The crash occurred around 1:30 p.m. Sunday on the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Line underpass. According to Brainerd Police, Michael Flannigan of Brainerd approached the tracks and attempted to pass in front of an empty coal train. Train operators said they sounded the train horn, but the snowmobile continued and was broadsided by the train. Flannigan died at the scene of the crash. Police say he was wearing a helmet. The crash remains under investigation.

Despite being very familiar with an Anoka County lake, a man crashed his pickup truck through the ice Sunday morning.

Authorities say Jim Flink of Elk River was driving a Chevy Silverado while pulling a snowmobile trailer on Peltier Lake in Lino Lakes when it broke through the ice.

Before the incident, Flink says he stopped and talked to a group of people on the lake who said it had about 14-18 inches of ice. He decided to drive on the lake to go snowmobiling. Flink says the front end of his truck went through ice that was about an inch thick.

We are learning new details after a school bus stolen by a 14-year-old boy crashed into a Roseville gas station Monday morning. The theft happened around 7:50 a.m. while the bus was parked on a side road with the keys inside and running near a Holiday Inn on the corner of Rice Street and Wheelock Parkway in St. Paul, according to police.

A man and a woman are dead after a high-speed chase that began in Carver County and ended in Eden Prairie early Friday ended with shots being fired, the Minnesota State Patrol said.

The series of dramatic events during the morning rush hour led to the closing of a long stretch of Hwy. 212, a traffic-tangling situation that may continue into the evening commute.

A school bus serving the Burnsville Eagan Savage District and a car collided at an intersection Wednesday morning in Burnsville, and the handful of students aboard escaped injury, officials said. The crash occurred shortly before 7 a.m. at Hwy. 13 and County Road 11, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s traffic operations center. One person in the car was slightly hurt but not seriously enough to require hospitalization, the State Patrol said.
