One killed and one seriously injured after 5 car crash on I-20 in Jefferson Co.

One person was killed and another injured in multiple vehicle crashes on Interstate 20/59 in Birmingham.

The Birmingham Police Department reports two separate crashes happened just before 1:30pm CT on I-20/59, just east of the Arkadelphia Road overpass.

The BPD says a vehicle clipped the rear of another vehicle while driving on I-20/59 southbound, caused the rear vehicle to lose control, cross the median, and crashed into traffic driving in the northbound lanes.

A total of 5 vehicles were involved, including 3 SUVs, one car, one wrecker, and one 18-wheeler truck.

Both the fatality victim and the injured victim were both in the car that collided with the wrecker.

No other injuries were reported.

Lanes in both southbound and northbound directions were closed, while an investigation was underway and to remove wreckage.
