A driver fleeing police Friday collided head-on with another car, bailed out on foot, then failed to scale a fence before throwing himself to the ground and surrendering to police. The suspect has been identified as 34-year-old Carl Smith. The pursuit started just before 3 p.m. near Florence Avenue and Flower Street in South Los Angeles, police said. The pursuit wound through streets for about 30 minutes. At one point the vehicle nearly hit a truck. The chase transitioned to the Century (105) Freeway, clocking speeds of 100, before going back onto the streets. At another point, the car hopped a curb and cut a corner through grass. The car then appeared to have blown a tire -- the right front of the vehicle could be seen smoking -- before rounding a turn and colliding head-on with another vehicle. The driver of that car got out in the nick of time, appearing to avoid injury. There were no other injuries reported. Smith was booked into jail on charges of stealing a vehicle and evading officers, an LAPD spokesman said. The car involved in the pursuit was reported stolen out of Cypress, said LAPD Lt. Manny Martinez.
