An investigation was underway Thursday in the death of a 22-year-old woman who crashed a Jeep along Interstate 8 in Alpine, injuring a man in the front seat and a 1-year-old boy in a safety seat in the rear.

The woman braked to avoid slowing traffic, swerved, and the Jeep went down an embankment along eastbound lanes, west of Tavern Road, about 5:20 p.m. Wednesday, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Kevin Pearlstein.

The 21-year-old man riding in the front suffered "major" injuries, and the boy had "minor" injuries, he said. Paramedics took the man to Sharp Memorial Hospital and the boy to Rady Children's Hospital.

The woman may have been driving too fast, he said, but drugs or alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash.
