Freight train kills male bicyclist in Northern California

RICHMOND, Calif. (AP) Authorities say a male bicyclist in Northern California was struck and killed after he tried to outrace an oncoming Union Pacific freight train. The train was traveling about 38 miles per hour when it struck the bicyclist in Richmond, California, about 15 miles northeast of San Francisco, shortly before 2 p.m. UP spokesman Francisco Castillo Jr. tells KRON-TV on Saturday (http://bit.ly/1Osfisy) it appears the bicyclist went around the crossing gates guarding the tracks to get to the other side before the train could pass. He says it takes about a mile for a train to come to a complete stop. By the time the crew sees a person or object on the tracks, it's too late.
