Police have arrested a suspected hit-and-run driver after one person was killed in a crash late Wednesday night in Denver’s Lowry neighborhood.

Denver prosecutors have filed charges of vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a fatal accident in the hit-and-run death of an Air Force airman.

According to the Denver District Attorney's Office, William Pettapiece, 33, was eastbound on Alameda Avenue in Denver last April when he struck the rear end of a motorcycle also travelling east. As a result of the impact, the victim, Michael Snyder, 23, was thrown from the motorcycle.

Snyder's father spoke to 7NEWS at the sentencing, saying that dealing with his son's remains difficult, but the family is satisfied with Snyder's sentence.

Police say the driver of a van, identified as William Pettapiece, 32, slammed into a motorcyclist, later identified as Michael Snyder, 23, a U.S. Air Force serviceman, after 11 p.m. at South Monaco Parkway and East Alameda Avenue. The driver of that motorcycle was taken to the hospital but died soon afterwards. Investigators think Pettapiece may have been drinking. He was arrested shortly after fleeing from the crash. The victim’s name hasn’t been released.
