Failing tire on Volusia dump truck in fatal crash was not a retread

Volusia maintenance records showed that the 2007 Freightliner dump truck was fitted with recapped tires but those tires were used for the rear wheels of the cargo vehicle, county officials said.
Florida Highway Patrol has identified the woman and baby killed in a crash in Volusia County on Thursday. The crash occurred just before noon at State Road 40 at County Road 3 in Pierson. Troopers said Victoria Potter, 21, and 10-week-old Terry Peterson, both of Astor, were killed in the crash. Potter was driving eastbound on SR 40 when the truck, which was driving westbound on SR 40, came into the eastbound lanes and collided with Potter's Ford Explorer. The driver of the truck was taken to Halifax Hospital with serious injuries. State Road 40 was shut down in both directions as the investigation continued. Local 6 news helicopter Sky 6 flew over the scene as tow trucks arrived to take the vehicles away. No charges have been filed as of Thursday evening. FHP said it is still investigating the crash.
