A motorcyclist was killed Wednesday when he was hit by a car he was trying to pass.

The crash happened at about 11:45 a.m. on U.S. Highway 40 just east of the entrance to Mary Jane. The man driving the motorcycle – identified as 57-year-old Michael Maner of Austin, Texas – suffered severe head injuries, and later died at St. Anthony's Hospital in Denver.

Police say an initial investigation shows that Maner was trying to pass a second vehicle that was trying to turn left off the highway. The driver of that vehicle was not injured.
