3 dead in car-train wreck in Louisiana, state police say - WTOP

NEW IBERIA, La. (AP) — Louisiana State Police say three people were killed when a car and an Amtrak passenger train crashed. There were 119 passengers on the train, and Tolbert says no passengers or crew were hurt. David says all of the dead and injured were in the car. Amtrak spokesman Mike Tolbert says the Sunset Limited train was en route from Los Angeles to New Orleans when it hit a vehicle that was on the tracks at a crossing. Master Trooper Brooks David (DAH-veed) says three others were taken to hospitals Tuesday, but the extent of their injuries was not immediately known.

Fourth person dies following New Iberia train crash; 12-year-old dies at Baton Rouge hospital. A fourth person has died following the train crash in New Iberia earlier this week, KATC-TV is reporting. According to the Acadian Funeral Home, 12-year-old Chase Day died Friday at Our Lady of Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge. His twin brother, who was also in the crash remains in the hospital.

NEW IBERIA, La. — Louisiana State Police say the death toll is now five from a wreck last week in which a passenger train hit a car in New Iberia. Master Trooper Brooks David said in a news release Sunday night (Dec. 27) that 49-year-old Stephen Leblanc of New Iberia died Saturday. Both were passengers in a car that was stopped on train tracks off Louisiana Highway 88 when the Amtrak train came through about 6 p.m. The driver, 70-year-old Phyllis Leblanc, and 12-year-old girls Jayla Daigle and Trinity Schmidt died at the scene. David says 12-year-old Chase Day died Friday.

Safety experts: site of fatal train-car wreck is dangerous

The Advocate (http://bit.ly/1nrK8GR ) reports that since 2012, at least one train a year has hit a vehicle stopped at that crossing. Phyllis Leblanc, her husband, twin 12-year-old grandsons, and two of the boys' friends were in a car hit by a passenger train there on Dec. 22. Leblanc and two girls died at the scene; her husband and one of the twins in hospitals. The family says witnesses told them other vehicles were in front of and behind the Leblancs'.
