Pedestrian, 17, struck, killed in North Las Vegas

A 17-year-old was pronounced dead at University Medical Center after being struck by a vehicle in North Las Vegas Tuesday afternoon, police reported. According to Officer Steven Wiese, of the North Las Vegas Police Department, the crash occurred before 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of North Commerce Street and West La Madre Way. Wiese said a single vehicle struck the teen and that the 25-year-old driver involved remained at the scene. A preliminary investigation showed speed may have been a factor in the crash, according to police.

Benavides was crossing Commerce Street when he was struck by a Dodge SUV driven by a 25-year-old Las Vegas man, a release from North Las Vegas police said. The 17-year-old North Las Vegas boy who died after being struck by a car Tuesday afternoon has been identified by the Clark County coroner's office as Daniel Benavides. The crash happened about 3:30 p.m. near the intersection of Commerce Street and La Madre Way. Benavides was taken in critical condition to University Medical Center's trauma unit, where he later died. The driver of the Dodge stayed on the scene.
