3 injured, 1 in critical condition after van crash, police say
Micael Borges Da Silva Castro wasn't wearing his seatbelt when the 2004 Chevy Express van he was driving was struck shortly after 4 p.m. by a Dodge Ram pickup at the intersection of Coolidge and New York avenues, according to a statement from the Manchester Police Department.
Police said investigators later determined the Castro had failed to stop at a stop sign as the van traveled eastbound into the intersection, where the pickup -- driven by Kenneth Work, 51, of the Whiting section of the township -- had the right of way.
Police said the van overturned twice, and Castro was ejected. His passengers, Hysla Santos, 21, of Newark, and Luiz Ribciro, 20, of Elizabeth, are both believed to have been wearing their seatbelts, and sustained injuries that were not life-threatening, according to police.
