A retired NYPD officer from East Patchogue was killed Sunday while driving in Bayport after a wheel on his vehicle fell off, causing the SUV to flip and catch fire, police said.

Police say two bystanders tried to extricate Schuierer from the vehicle but were overwhelmed by the flames.
Michael Schuierer was eastbound in a Jeep SUV on Sunrise Service Road in Bayport when he lost control of the vehicle at 12:15 p.m. The Jeep overturned and caught fire. Schuierer died at the scene.
