Transit bus driver William Pena killed and several bus riders injured after a stolen truck and bus collide, then crash into building on Seventh Avenue and West 14th Street in Manhattan, New York

A bus driver was killed and several others were injured, two of them critically, when a stolen truck and a bus collided at a West Village intersection Wednesday morning, authorities say. The MTA bus and the truck crashed into each other at Seventh Avenue and West 14th Street shortly before 6 a.m., the FDNY says. Both vehicles then slammed into scaffolding at the intersection’s southeast corner. Two people were taken to Beth Israel Hospital in critical condition and another two suffered minor injuries, officials said. Police said the stolen truck was being driven by a 22-year-old man. It's not clear if he was hurt or where he allegedly stole the truck. A man who hands out free newspapers in the area stated that he heard the collision, then saw the bus and truck careen toward the building under construction and hit the scaffolding as well as a food truck that operates nearby. Several blocks around the crash site were closed and local bus service was being rerouted while emergency crews worked.
