A 35-year-old Pittsburgh man was struck and killed Sunday while standing near the multiple-vehicle backup on the Pennsylvania Turnpike that involved as many as 50 vehicles.

A driver, whose identity has not been released, was involved in a one-vehicle accident while heading west when their vehicle slid and crashed just after snow started falling around 12:30 p.m., said a turnpike spokesman. When the motorist got out of their vehicle after the accident, they were hit by another vehicle and killed.

A 12-car pile up occurred after the initial crash, which triggered two or three more accidents, and caused a number of fender benders. There was one other unknown injury, and that person was transported to a local hospital for treatment, according to.

State police were still at the scene reconstructing the accident at 5 p.m. The accident caused a three-mile traffic backlog, and those stuck in traffic are being directed around the accident in the left lane.

UPDATE: Andrew S. Fisher has been identified as the fatality in this accident. 12/09/13.
