Woman struck, killed by car while exiting trolley

Police say a woman was struck and killed by a vehicle in Southwest Philadelphia Monday morning.It happened around 9:15 a.m. at the intersection of South 54th Street and Woodland Avenue in Southwest Philadelphia.The driver of the striking vehicle attempted to go around a stopped trolley, then struck and killed the 38-year-old victim as she exited the trolley, police said.SEPTA says they are operating shuttle buses for the Route 11 Trolley between 49th and 58th streets on Woodland Avenue while police investigate.The driver of the striking vehicle did stop at the accident scene.The name of the victim has not been released.

Police say a mother of three was struck and killed by a vehicle in Southwest Philadelphia Monday morning.It happened around 9:15 a.m. at the intersection of South 54th Street and Woodland Avenue in Southwest Philadelphia.Witnesses say a car moving at a high rate of speed drove around a trolley that was letting passengers off.The vehicle struck the 38-year-old victim as she exited the trolley.She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name has not been released.The suspect then slammed head-on into another car coming down Woodland Avenue before hitting a pole.Witnesses say it's nothing new to see vehicles speeding across the intersection of 54th and Woodland, illegally passing trolleys.SEPTA operated shuttle buses for the Route 11 Trolley between 49th and 58th streets on Woodland Avenue while police investigated the incident.The victim of the vehicle that was struck head-on is hospitalized in stable condition with wounds to his legs.The suspect did not attempt to flee the scene. He is being questioned by police, and formal charges against him are pending.

Driver charged after car hits, kills woman crossing street

Police have filed charges against the driver of a car that struck a mother of three as she attempted to catch a SEPTA trolley in Southwest Philadelphia.It happened around 9:15 a.m. Monday at the intersection of South 54th Street and Woodland Avenue.The trolley was stopped at the intersection letting passengers off and others board when 38-year-old Miriam Wilson was crossing Woodland attempting to catch the trolley.That's when a 2015 Nissan Altima, traveling eastbound on Woodland Avenue, allegedly blew through a red light at a high rate of speed. When the driver attempted to pass the stopped trolley on the right his vehicle struck Wilson.The driver then lost control of the vehicle, crossing over into oncoming traffic and colliding head-on with another vehicle before hitting a pole.Miriam Wilson was pronounced dead at the scene.The driver of the Nissan Altima is identified as 23-year-old Malachi Armstrong. Police say there was an odor of marijuana in Armstrong's car. He was arrested and charged with Involuntary Manslaughter, Homicide by Vehicle, Homicide by Vehicle while Driving Under the Influence, Simple Assault, and related offenses.Witnesses say it's nothing new to see vehicles speeding across the intersection of 54th and Woodland, illegally passing trolleys.The victim of the vehicle that was struck head-on is hospitalized in stable condition with wounds to his legs.

Police: Man charged in crash that killed Philadelphia woman

Investigators said Tuesday that Malachi Armstrong was trying to pass a trolley in a Nissan Altima and hit 38-year-old Miriam Wilson Monday morning after running a red light. The Philadelphia woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Armstrong is charged with involuntary manslaughter, homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence and related offenses. Police say Armstrong smelled of marijuana when he was arrested. It's unclear if he has an attorney who could comment on the charges.
