Police say a woman was struck and killed by a vehicle in Southwest Philadelphia Monday morning.It happened around 9:15 a.m. at the intersection of South 54th Street and Woodland Avenue in Southwest Philadelphia.The driver of the striking vehicle attempted to go around a stopped trolley, then struck and killed the 38-year-old victim as she exited the trolley, police said.SEPTA says they are operating shuttle buses for the Route 11 Trolley between 49th and 58th streets on Woodland Avenue while police investigate.The driver of the striking vehicle did stop at the accident scene.The name of the victim has not been released.

When the driver attempted to pass the stopped trolley on the right his vehicle struck Wilson.The driver then lost control of the vehicle, crossing over into oncoming traffic and colliding head-on with another vehicle before hitting a pole.Miriam Wilson was pronounced dead at the scene.The driver of the Nissan Altima is identified as 23-year-old Malachi Armstrong. Police say there was an odor of marijuana in Armstrong's car. He was arrested and charged with Involuntary Manslaughter, Homicide by Vehicle, Homicide by Vehicle while Driving Under the Influence, Simple Assault, and related offenses.Witnesses say it's nothing new to see vehicles speeding across the intersection of 54th and Woodland, illegally passing trolleys.The victim of the vehicle that was struck head-on is hospitalized in stable condition with wounds to his legs.

Investigators said Tuesday that Malachi Armstrong was trying to pass a trolley in a Nissan Altima and hit 38-year-old Miriam Wilson Monday morning after running a red light. The Philadelphia woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Armstrong is charged with involuntary manslaughter, homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence and related offenses. Police say Armstrong smelled of marijuana when he was arrested. It's unclear if he has an attorney who could comment on the charges.
