Driver charged in fatal hitting of pedestrian on shoulder of I-495

The accident shut down all four lanes of the outer loop of the Beltway for about an hour on Monday morning, and the road did not fully reopen until about 2:45 p.m. At that point, the Metropolitan Area Transportation Operations Coordination Program said that the crash had caused a nine-mile delay.

A truck driver was charged with reckless driving after he hit and killed a pedestrian on the side of the Beltway on Monday morning. The driver, Anthony B. Custis, of Baltimore, was holding a cellphone while driving a commercial vehicle, and his truck had faulty brakes and other equipment issues. Custis hit and killed Najdi Hicham, 45, of Centreville near Exit 49 for Route 7 in Fairfax County at around 10 a.m. on Monday. Hicham was working for Fairfax Towing and Recovery to remove an abandoned car from the shoulder of I-495 when Custis drove onto the shoulder and struck him.
