A Spokane man died Sunday night after the car he was riding in on Saturday night hit a ditch along state Highway 211 west of Newport. David Pitts, 56, was a passenger in a car driven by Jeffrey H. Schoeny, 21, of Kapaa, Hawaii. Schoeny was headed south shortly after 8 p.m. on Saturday when he lost control of his vehicle about 12 miles west of Newport. The 1985 Toyota 4Runner veered into a ditch and went airborne before landing on its wheels. Pitts was not wearing a seat belt. He died at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday at Sacred Heart Medical Center. Schoeny, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured. The WSP said Schoeny was driving too fast for the conditions. Possible charges of negligent driving and not having insurance are pending.

What money damages are recoverable in a death claim? Every death from an accident is tragic. When a death is the result of someone else’s negligence, certain survivors may make a wrongful death claim against those responsible. Close relatives may recover monetary damages for the loss of financial support, as well as for medical, funeral, and burial expenses, lost earnings, and in some cases for pain, suffering, and loss of love and affection. Learn more about wrongful death accidents here…
