10-Vehicle Crash Closes SB 405 Freeway Lanes in Van Nuys.

At least eight people were taken to a hospital with minor injuries, a CHP spokesman said.

The morning commute along the 405 Freeway in the San Fernando Valley was snarled for miles Wednesday after 10 vehicles, including a big rig, collided and shut down all lanes of the busy freeway.

Emergency crews responded to the scene about 9:30 a.m. on the southbound 405 Freeway near the Sherman Way exit in Van Nuys.

All southbound lanes were closed for more than two hours, reopening shortly before noon, the California Highway Patrol tweeted. The crash closed a single northbound lane, which was reopened by 10:40 p.m., the agency tweeted.

Eight people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to a spokesman for CHP citing information from a police official on the scene. At least 10 vehicles, including four crumpled sedans and a big rig, were involved in the collision.

Color-coded tarps were laid down in the right lane of the freeway, creating a triage area for potentially injured drivers and passengers.

Traffic caused the crash was backed up to the 118 Freeway and drivers were diverted off at Sherman Way, according to SigAlert. A separate crash further along the 405 Freeway had traffic slow from the 5 Freeway to Skirball Center.
