Police say the traffic lights at the intersection of Columbia and Meridian roads were not working when the crash happened at 11 a.m. It was not immediately clear why the lights were not functioning. The scooter was making a left turn from northbound Meridian Road onto Columbia Road when it was hit by a southbound truck.

Ada County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Jake Vogt said the crash remains under investigation.

"At this point, there's no reason to believe alcohol was involved," he said. "There's no reason to believe speeds were a factor. We're still investigating those things, though."

The Ada County coroner identified the scooter rider as Brian Burger of Meridian. He died of blunt force trauma of the head.

The scooter driver was rushed to a local hospital but did not survive. He was not wearing a helmet. The truck driver was not injured. No citations have been issued, and the crash remains under investigation.
