Man killed, woman seriously injured after they are struck by an SUV while crossing a road in Fayetteville.
Pedestrian killed in Fayetteville, wife injured.
Authorities say a man is dead and his wife seriously injured after a pedestrian accident in Fayetteville Thursday evening.
It happened around 7:30 p.m. on Cedar Creek Road near Bureau Drive.
Police say the man and woman were struck by an SUV when they were trying to cross the four-lane highway.
Officers believe the couple was staying at one of the hotels along Cedar Creek Road, and had crossed the road earlier. An employee at a convenience store says the man and woman left the store headed back across to a motel.
A driver, who was just pulling onto the road, saw what happened next.
"I heard a loud thud, looked up, and the guy was pretty much 10-15 feet up the street," said the witness. "The wife was lying on the road. Her leg was severed. It was pretty gruesome, and she was screaming for her husband. She was real worried about him."
The woman was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center with serious injuries. Her condition is unknown.
The man was pronounced deceased on scene.
Police are not releasing their names.
There is a crosswalk maybe nearby but the couple did not cross there.
Several people who work in the area said this is the third or fourth time in the past several months that people have been hit trying to cross and dodge traffic.
No one inside the SUV was injured.
