A pedestrian was hit and killed Wednesday morning by a volunteer firefighter who was on his way back to the station, Allegheny County police said.

The victim was struck about 9:15 a.m. in the 500 block of St. Clair Avenue in Clairton. He was flown to Jefferson Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the crash happened while the firefighter was returning to the station in an SUV after he'd been called off from responding to a call. According to witnesses, he wasn't speeding.

Police have not released the names of the victim or the firefighter.
