A small plane crashed into Lake Winnipesaukee in Alton around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The plane crashed into the water near Rattlesnake Island. The seaplane was fully submerged in the lake after the crash.

The pilot, a 59-year-old Massachusetts man, was taken to a local hospital to be checked out. Marine Patrol said its officers found the man clinging to the plane. He was conscious and able to tell them what happened.

The pilot told rescuers that he was doing touch-and-go landings when he had a "pontoon failure," causing the plane to flip.

A single-engine experimental plane has crashed while landing on an ice runway on Lake Winnipesaukee.

The small craft clipped a snow bank while attempting to land on the runway in Alton Bay. The pilot was the only person aboard and was uninjured.

Photos showed the bright yellow plane nose-down on the ice, its right landing gear apparently crumpled below it.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

The runway is still operational and safe for planes to land.
