Anita Daugavietis, 58, was riding her bicycle southbound on Plainfield Avenue near Rockhill Drive around 11:30pm on Tuesday when she was hit by an SUV. She was taken to Grand Rapids Hospital but still died. Amy Vanderwal, the driver of the SUV, said she did not see Daugavietis because there were no lights on her bicycle. According to the Kent County Sheriff’s Department, Daugavietis was not driving under the influence and wasn't speeding when the accident happened.

A man died after crashing his car into a tree at the intersection of 7 Mile Road and Pine Island Drive late Thursday night. Kent County sheriff’s deputies and the Plainfield Township Fire Department responded to the wreck around 11:20 p.m. Thursday. Timothy Hiemstra, 40, of Sparta was driving east on 7 Mile Road when he failed to stop for the stop sign at Pine Island Drive, according to police. Hiemstra’s vehicle went through the intersection and hit a tree. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
