It was a very foggy and somewhat icy morning near Baker City, Oregon when Whitby was driving a pickup truck on I-84 towards Council, ID. A semi-truck in front of him slid on black ice and turned sideways, blocking the entire highway. With no way to avoid it, Whitby smashed into the side of the semi-trailer, and another semi-truck that was behind Whitby's pickup inevitably collided with the wreck, sandwiching Whitby's truck between two semi-trucks in what ended up being a 26-vehicle pileup.

Crashes caused by freezing rain and icy road conditions closed lanes on Interstate 84 west of Pendleton on Monday morning. One of the crashes involved a FedEx trailer that split open at 6 a.m., spilling freight and blocking eastbound traffic, according to Oregon State Police. A commercial truck traveling behind the FedEx trailer also crashed. Neither driver was injured. The left eastbound lane is now open for traffic while workers continue to pick up debris and clear the scene.
