A man identified as 33-year-old Jeffrey Conlin was seen running a red light and performing an illegal u-turn by police officers who were at that time responding to a burglary on Highway 290. Though he was likely not involved with the burglary, Conlin allegedly shot at police officers and sped away as they tried to stop him. After stealing a woman's car at Highway 6 and FM 529, he continued down Highway 6 where he struck officer Richard Martin, 47, who was laying spike strips on the road in an attempt to end the dangerous chase.

According to police, a man was driving erratically in the parking lot of a Valero gas station on North Shepherd Drive and Pinemont Drive. A store clerk told police the man appeared to be intoxicated and had nearly hit several other customers with a silver pickup truck. Police pursued the man and put down spike strips on the road and blew out the front tires of the pickup. The suspect then stole a blue pickup truck that a driver had left running next to a gas pump, in which a 4-year-old son was still sitting in the back seat.
