Authorities closed Interstate 29 in western Iowa after a truck veered off the freeway and caught fire.

The driver of the truck was found dead, but it's possible he had a medical condition that led to the Thursday morning crash.

The Woodbury County Sheriff's Office says the incident happened when the truck, which was hauling a trailer filled with hamburger, veered off I-29 near Salix, south of Sioux City.

The truck crossed a shallow ditch, came to rest in trees and caught fire.

A 67-year-old man and his 43-year-old wife died Thursday night when they were stopped on 65 Highway in Sedalia and another car rammed into them.

Eldon Coleman, 67, was stopped on the highway at about 10:20 p.m., facing eastbound because of a prior crash. Neither he nor his wife, Melissa Coleman, 43, were wearing a seatbelt when the 63-year-old driver, heading southbound crashed into them.

Dale Carmichael, 63, of Booneville was wearing his seatbelt and survived the collision.

Both Eldon and Melissa Coleman were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are seeking the public's help in identifying the driver in a hit-and-run crash late Thursday that left a man clinging to life.

The victim, a 53-year-old man, was crossing Domino Lane near Harmon Road in Upper Roxborough when he was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene, police said. He was taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center, where he remained in extremely critical condition last night.

A 39-year-old Machias man was arrested by state police for felony drunken driving after he allegedly caused a rear-end crash Thursday at the intersection of Lakeview Boulevard and State Route 16 in Machias.

Steven Howe was arrested on the felony charge after it was confirmed he had a previous DWI conviction in the last decade. He also was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. He faces further proceedings in Machias Town Court in several weeks. No one was injured in the accident.

The man who police said caused the crash that closed Route 8 North in Ansonia for hours will be responsible for the cleanup costs, according to the state Department of Transportation.

State police said Chris Roche, 38, of Fairfield, was driving when he somehow lost control of his pickup and hit a guardrail on Thursday.

He was hauling a box trailer carrying 55-gallon drums of silicone-based foam insulation, according to officials from the State Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

A driver trying to back up into a parking space on the Upper East Side instead plowed into a Park Avenue building, hurting a resident inside, officials say.

The driver accidentally backed into the side of the building one Park Avenue near 76th Street when he hit the gas pedal instead of the brake, the FDNY says.

The car plowed into a basement apartment, injuring the resident inside, authorities say. The victim was taken to Lenox Hill Hospital with bumps, cuts and bruises.

Charges have not been filed, but investigation is continuing.

A head-on collision between two vehicles Thursday evening in Orchard Park resulted in a Derby woman being charged with driving while intoxicated and sent both drivers to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, Orchard Park police reported.

Diane Kester, 49, failed to keep her vehicle on the right side of California Road, near Ellis Road, shortly before 7:15 p.m. Thursday, police said. Her vehicle collided with the other one. Air bags deploy in both vehicles.

A 17-year-old Danville boy was killed in a solo car crash on state Highway 24 in Lafayette Thrusday morning, a fire captain said.

The crash occurred just after 11 a.m. on eastbound Highway 24 near the Pleasant Hill Road exit in Lafayette.

A driver suffered serious injuries Thursday morning in a crash between a log truck and a pickup truck on Interstate 95 southbound, according to Nassau County Fire Rescue.

The crash happened about 8 a.m., just south of the Georgia border.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, 27-year-old Stephen Fanning was driving his pickup in the center lane heading toward U.S. Highway 17 when he changed lanes into the right lane to pass a vehicle. Troopers said he underestimated the speed of the log truck and struck the rear of it.
