The two people were riding in a 2004 Explorer east on Highway 20 when the vehicle left the roadway to the right, and struck a cement barrier. Jeremy Dean Martin was driving a car on Cypress Creek Bridge when the car went off the bridge and into the creek. Martin was able to escape the car but Johnathon Heath Atkisson, a passenger, was trapped inside. Emergency responders were not able to rescue Atkisson in time to save his life. Investigators say thaat Martin was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.
Sargent was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident occurred at 6:18 p.m., two miles north of Cusick. The cause is still under investigation, the Washington State Patol said.
