At about 8:24 a.m., a southbound 2011 Chevrolet Impala driven by 32-year-old Joshua A. Padgett of Carlton was on Highway 45 just before 8:30 a.m. when it crossed the center line and struck a northbound 1999 Oldsmobile 88 driven by 56-year-old Karen I. Johnson of Esko. One driver died a the scene, and the other died at the hospital. Two children were in the Impala: one child was taken by ambulance to Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth, while the other was transported by ambulance to Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare in St. Paul. The incident is still under investigation.
