It was about 8:45 p.m. when 35-year-old Alberta Beckham was driving east on Hawthorne Road and a large black bear walked directly into the path of her vehicle. Beckham collided with the bear before her car careened into another eastbound vehicle, driven by Michael F. Scott, 45. Both cars then left the roadway. A passenger in Scott's vehicle, identified as Tammy Scott, 42, was seriously injured after the cars collided and taken to UF Health Shands Hospital. Local authorities say bears sometimes reach unusual sizes due to a diet of human garbage.
