One person was killed Thursday afternoon in a multiple-vehicle accident that shut down eastbound I-94 near Michigan City, Indiana police said.

The crash involved seven semi-trailer trucks and several other passenger vehicles, police said. Other injuries were reported, but the extent of the injures is not yet known.

Police did not immediately release details on the cause of the crash at mile marker 36 in LaPorte County, but weather may have played a role.

The expressway was closed east of mile marker 34, police said.
