On Tuesday night, a crowded Metro-North commuter train struck a Jeep Cherokee on the tracks in north of White Plains, New York. The crash caused a fire that gutted the lead car of the train, according to officials with the MTA. An unknown number of passengers on the train and the driver of the SUV were killed. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority reports that the crossing gates came down on top of the Jeep, which was stopped on the tracks. The driver got out to inspect the rear of the vehicle. When she got back in and drove forward and was struck by the train.
